And he called VFS out. Let me start by saying that the youtube generation is for the most part lazy and uneducated, but here comes a young man with a little more thought than the average internet troll. Charlie Winter, when finding a VFS final project by Ori Ben-Shabat, deemed it neccesary to formulate a response in almost Zoolanderish CG form. So instead of going total crap as most notions do, Charlie pulled out his demo reel and served up a plate of style. This is what the youtube experience should be about.
Although the skin on his webpage is misleading in regards to his talent, 21 year old Charlie pushes the limits of both himself and youtube on a seemingly ongoing basis. In this piece, he explains shooting, acting in, and doing the post-production on his projects, I can’t help but be a little impressed that he shoots green screen in his house (what looks like bedroom even). Having implimented some of the VFS youtube experience, I saw two sides of this; one being minor annoyance (which I think is the route they’ve taken), the other being an effort to further the challenge. I would love to see a tasteful VFS retaliation, if I still worked there I’d do it…

Cool work by both parties but this smells like a dick measuring contest to me. I don’t know the school nor the people involved but do you really need to respond to someones grad project by saying “I’m better then you, youtube is my turf, now go home”? Of course there are better people out there. Whoever you are, whatever you do, there is always someone better then you and I don’t like the attitude that CW brings to the dance. It’s like saying “your website isn’t as good as mine so get off the internet”. CW has an impressive reel, but there’s something to be said for maturity, and judging from these two offers, Ori has him beat in that category.

Thanks Todd – VFS is quite flattered that someone else is trying to piggy back on the attention Ori and Colin has garnered. What missing from this post is the follow up email that CW sent in the background.
“Dont take offense to my demoreel challange, i just thought it would be fun to provoke other artists on here to show there stuff….”
-Charlie Winter
No offence taken Charlie. Our stuff is there – that should be response enough.
