<p>There&#8217;s something happily surreal about sipping on your morning coffee and reading the newspaper when you stumbled across <a title="MultiSports Centre of Excellence" href="http://www.vancouversun.com/opinion/editorials/Protecting+Canada+oceans/3140278/Wetting+have+saved+life+young+Vancouver+Island+girl/3161415/Burnaby+MultiSport+Centre+tabbed+future+global+athletic+landmark/4147149/story.html" target="_blank">a story about a client&#8217;s success story</a>. Very nice indeed.</p>
<p>A few years ago we designed <a title="Multisport Centre of Excellence Case Study" href="http://industrialbrand.com/work/case-studies/multisport-centre-of-excellence?page=1" target="_blank">the logo, brand identity system and website</a> for a proposed state of the art sports training, medicine and therapy complex in Burnaby called <a title="MultiSports Centre of Excellence" href="http://www.multisportcentreofexcellence.com">The MultiSport Centre of Excellence</a>. After years of delays, the construction has finally begun with a ground-breaking ceremony.</p>

And with the 2010 Olympics fast approaching, we&#8217;re excited at the chance to work on some of the initiatives that will promote the province we&#8217;re all so proud to live in.</p>

<p>The BC Chapter of GDC has been selected among a select few organizations to receive the 2008 Capilano University <a href="http://www.capilanou.ca/for-the-media/archives/2008-media-releases/Capilano_University_honours_its_2008_President_s_Service_Award_recipients.html">President&#8217;s Service Awards</a> as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. GDC/BC was honoured for its continued support and contributions to the university, its students and the design industry into which their graduates enter upon completing their studies.</p>
<p>To celebrate its 40th year since opening in 1968, Capilano University will be holding a special President’s Service Awards event on Saturday, November 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Birch building atrium at the North Vancouver campus.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve kept our eye on this year&#8217;s inaugural <a title="Wolda '08" href="http://www.wolda.org/">Wolda &#8217;08 Worldwide Logo Design Competition</a> hosted by Italy&#8217;s <a title="Eulda Books" href="http://www.euldabooks.com/">Eulda Books</a>. They recently announce the winners chosen by an international three-tier jury, including GDC&#8217;s own <a title="David Coates" href="http://www.iondesign.ca/our_story/our_team.php?id=4&amp;press=1&amp;draw_column=1:4:1">David Coates</a>. 192 logos (174 professionals + 18 designed by students) were selected from almost 1100 entries submitted from 43 different countries around the world—though not a single winner were from either Mexico or Canada. All winning logos are <a title="Wolda Winners Showcase" href="http://www.wolda.org/showcase/">showcased on their website</a> and in the <a title="Wolda Annual" href="http://www.wolda.org/shop/">Wolda &#8217;08 printed annual </a>available for sale now.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope we see a few Canadian examples of winning logo design in the 2009 competition.</p>

<p>My friend <a title="Piers Fawkes" href="http://www.psfk.com/">Piers Fawkes</a> and <a title="Noah Brier" href="http://www.noahbrier.com/">Noah Brier</a> hosted the original Likemind event in New York, but this trend of micro-gatherings happening in cities around the world.</p>
<p>After a period of inactivity, <a title="Richard Band" href="http://eggstrategy.com/team_richard.html">Richard Band</a> and I are trying to reinvigorate the Vancouver version of this event as we host likeminded individuals connecting for a casual coffee and conversation about the issues that are important to them.</p>

Whether it&#8217;s elixirs for male enlargement, vacations to nowhere, or the infamous <a title="Wiki scam article" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud" target="_blank">Nigerian bank scam</a>, we all wish someone would do something to end the madness.  Well somebody, actually somebodies are doing something about it. They&#8217;re called Scambaiters and they are a group of anyonymous web citizens dedicated to making the lives of those junk mailers a living hell. Instead of falling for the ploy, they bait the scammers into believing there is money in it for them, but send the scammer on a &#8220;safari&#8221; which sees them in different countries (most of them politically unstable), without money and without resources to rescue themselves from it. The idea behind it is, to keep the scammers incapacitated and away from their computers for as long as possible and as humilating as possible.
