DESCRIPTION Holiday Card

OBJECTIVE Create a head-turning holiday card that reinforces the Kirk brand while highlighting their variable data technology capabilities.

APPROACH In nature, snowflakes are formed as water droplets crystallize in the atmosphere. This very simple process creates perfectly unique snowflakes of remarkable and stunning complexity – each exhibiting six rays of perfect radial symmetry. With the help of friend and local digital artist Jeremy Thorp, we simulated the natural process of snowflake generation. The “”Kirk Snowflake Generator” emulated the complexity of a snowflake, replacing the water droplets with a repeating pattern of 600 separate letters taken from the recipients’ first names. So just as in nature, each snowflake and holiday card that we created was totally unique.

RESULTS 608 unique cards were created and sent out for the holiday season. Recipients responded very positively, acknowledging the originality of the piece. Ultimately, it managed to break through the typical holiday card clutter and highlight Kirk as a company that stands above the rest.

Featured Project

CLIENT Graphic Designers of Canada, BC Chapter

DESCRIPTION Blog

OBJECTIVE The GDC/BC blog was developed to create an extension of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada’s brand, create an online resource centre and events calendar and facilitate online dialogue between members and friends of GDC’s BC Chapter where they can post and discuss ideas and issues in an open forum relating to its mission.

APPROACH The site is dedicated to its members with a layout focused on the conversations, events and topics relating to communication design in BC, Canada and the world. Using existing elements of the GDC’s national website www.gdc.net, we further reinforced the brand and created a site using a blog format with a full-featured CMS backend, allowing non-coders access to this tool. Images on the site are of uniform size and add to the clean, organized aesthetic. The navigation and layout was made as simple as possible, and designed with an emphasis on the conversations and topics being discussed.

RESULTS GDC Members responded very positively to the site, and traffic and subscriptions have grown quickly. The Blog has already been expanded to include the Vancouver Island Chapter, re-uniting both regions with one voice and a shared membership communication forum and resource centre. Membership applications and event attendance in BC has increased dramatically in the short time since the site’s launch and the GDC National Council has indicated a desire to enable this type of communication tool for all chapters across Canada.

DESCRIPTION Media Kit

OBJECTIVE Create a flexible identity and stationery system for this newly formed contemporary dance company.

APPROACH The visuals we created for this innovative contemporary dance company are based on the actual movement of the lead dancer, Crystal Pite. Inspired by videos of past performances, descriptions of the works and discussions with Crystal, we combined existing photography with our own illustrative artwork. The overall effect is an ethereal quality evocative of the powerful movements and emotion that is so fleeting in a live dance performance.

RESULTS Crystal was thrilled with the look of the materials, the delivery of which corresponded with the launch of Kidd Pivot’s first performance, Lost Action. Crystal has received much media attention locally and internationally, perhaps in part a result of the new media kit. Either way, Kidd Pivot has arrived.
