Thanks to the swag bag at Graphex 2008 Judges Night I find myself ogling Kwantlen University College’s Graphic Design for Marketing 2007 Degree Show Catalogue (what a mouthful). Being that the show happened over six months ago, I guess better late than never. This catalogue is clean, lean and mean! The design is restrained and does what it’s suppose to – bring each students project to the foreground. A simple and vibrant colour palette, plenty of space, variation in layout rhythms, thoughtful typography, experimentation with production techniques and well written project briefs help this Grad Catalogue stand out from the others.
Perhaps the only fault, as IBC’s senior designer Simon pointed out to me, was the students lack of experience with on-press issues. If you look closely the black copy is fussy. Simon suggested this may of happened if the black copy was set as a process grey rather than as a spot pantone. As a young designer it was a good lesson for me as Simon and I proceeded to talk about various on-press issues and techniques.
