Working with the residents of the slums of Rio De Janeiro, artists Dre Urhahn and Jeroen Koohaas have been painting a giant mural right in the heart of the community with the goal of instilling a sense of pride among the people and to improve the image of the favelas to the rest of the world. The results so far:
The image is almost complete! The inhabitants of Vila Cruzeiro, who tried to show off their most uninterested side this far, can’t curb their enthusiasm any longer. All people, young and old, come to give us props and tell them how proud they are to have this landmark in their community. Even the armed-to-the-teeth drugtraffickers, who post right around the corner, start giving us thumbs up.
