It’s not new to the web, but it’s new to me. Check out Rsizr (Resizer if you put the vowels back in). Its promotes itself as an app that “lets you intelligently resize your images” and actually works pretty well. It basically looks for optically weak parts of your image (or areas that are not rich in detail) and shrinks those as opposed to areas that are rich in detail. There’s a cool youtube video outlining the technology and how it works. Right now this exists just as an online flash app and due to bandwidth and processing power you are limited to fairly small images but one day I’d love to give this a run as a Photoshop plugin. It has its limitations as do all “smart” plugins or apps but as is the case with all relatively new technology, raises some interesting possibilities for what’s to come.
