May 4-7th was the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada‘s Annual General Meeting, graciously hosted by the Alberta North Chapter in Edmonton, Alberta. As the President-Elect of the BC Chapter, I was proud to serve as one of the delegates to attend the four intense days of meetings which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the organization. My head is still spinning for all that transpired and have never been so proud to be a professional member of the GDC.

In true BC style, our entire crew got kitted up with matching red track jackets (thanks American Apparel) with GDC BC on the back (set in cheesy fuzzy white Cooper Black lettering of course) and led the entire delegation in “Designer Calisthenics” as our chapter report. We essentially ignored all the slides of images that showed all the great events and initiatives we undertook as a chapter (which we submitted in our reports anyway), but rather chose to get the entire room up out of their seats, stretching and doing silly exercises such as the Pantone Fan, Exacto Flex and Money Dance. You can view the images from our presentation here.
I’m happy to report that there was no shortage of lively debate and intelligent discourse during our four days together as the National Council made improvements to our constitution and created a clearer vision and roadmap for the design community in the coming years. There was also a hearty dose of good old-fashioned socializing with wonderful and talented design professionals from across Canada. The whole event served to remind me how serious the business of design can be as well as how much I really like designers – they’re passionate, inspiring and fun people.
Check out all of the photos from the event here – debauchery and all.
