I wasn't involved in the design of the piece, and appreciate your perspective, but I know that the paper is 30% post consumer waste, FSC Certified and manufactured with Green-e certified windpower. The coating doesn't contain hard metals and although not ideal (environmentally speaking) it is a massive reduction in carbon impact compared to previous years which saw much more paper, printing, postage, etc—especially when combined with the new online submission process.

You know, as designers we do what we can to find the best balance between concept, message and delivery, while minimizing impact. I agree, more sustainable choices could have been made, but this was the result of consultation and dialogue. I'm sorry you disapprove.

Gotta say I'm actually not that impressed with the piece; for a professional organization promoting sustainability design, it's not even recyclable. Thumbs down.
